Cleaning tailored to people and the organisation at MIVAS
At MIVAS, it's all about people. As a social enterprise, the organisation provides work and support to people who face barriers to the mainstream labour market. Stephan Vanpachtenbeke, who is in charge of the housekeeping department and the ironing service, explains in this blog how the organisation is strongly committed to ergonomics and clear work processes for its staff. He explains how the partnership with BOMA plays a key role in this.
A people-centred approach in a multifaceted organisation
With over 780 employees and activities ranging from food packaging to painting, a grounds maintenance service, and internal and external cleaning, structure, quality and support are essential. MIVAS has made a conscious decision to organise many tasks manually, so that as many people as possible can be employed. This requires materials and methods that are not only efficient, but above all people-focused. This also applies to Stephan Vanpachtenbeke's housekeeping department, where the partnership with BOMA has been making a significant difference on the work floor for over five years.
Started small, grown strong

The partnership between MIVAS and BOMA began modestly, initially with just two products: Interior and Sanitary. Today, it has grown into a comprehensive cleaning range comprising products, supplies, machines and support services.
"It's become almost impossible to list everything we purchase, really," laughs Stephan. "It ranges from sanitary products and paper goods to floor mops, machines and window cleaning solutions." Due to the specific nature of the work and needs within a social enterprise, changes always take place step by step. "We can't change everything all at once," explains Stephan. "Every new product goes through a quality and safety process. Instructions are adapted with photos and clear steps, and various training courses are provided. That takes time, but it's essential for our people."

Ergonomics as a daily priority
A few years ago, MIVAS set up an internal working group on ergonomics. The aim was not only to reduce physical strain, but also to enable staff to work more comfortably and efficiently. For Stephan's team, too, this identified specific issues they wanted to tackle: "Analyses showed that with our old cleaning trolleys with a press system, staff were using the press up to 50 or 60 times a day. On top of that, there were heavy buckets of water on the trolley. We wanted to avoid that weight and those repetitive movements."
Together with BOMA, a better solution was sought. The result: concept trolleys with pre-impregnated mops. "We can really see the difference today," emphasises Stephan. "No more heavy water tanks, less pushing and lifting, and a working height that better suits the staff. They take a pre-impregnated mop from the trolley and can get straight back to work. That's much more efficient."
The variety of concept trolleys - with or without a waste bag, smaller for work on the move - also demonstrates how customisation and ergonomics go hand in hand. Whereas the same trolley used to be found everywhere, the right solution is now consciously chosen for each location.
In addition, there is a strong focus on the correct use of equipment, such as maintaining the right posture, adjusting handles to the correct height and providing clear work instructions. BOMA supports this with tips and practical advice, which Stephan then translates into training courses for coaches and staff.
One partner means more time and peace of mind
According to Stephan, the added value of a one-stop supplier lies primarily in the support and collaborative approach: "If I'm facing a problem, I contact Steven at BOMA. We assess the situation together, test different solutions and look for the most cost-effective and ergonomic approach."
In addition, the partnership with BOMA provides MIVAS with significant time savings. "Ordering, delivery and follow-up run smoothly because everything is consolidated with a single partner," says Stephan. "What's more, agreements are honoured correctly. When I place my order, I know that the rest will automatically run smoothly. That gives me peace of mind."
Innovation with a focus on sustainability
Sustainability is also receiving increasing attention within MIVAS's operations. For example, the organisation is committed to circular projects and reducing waste flows. A recent innovation in the cleaning department is the introduction of Trebio, a probiotic cleaning solution. "That product is a real winner for us," says Stephan. "It cleans thoroughly, smells fresh and works best with cold water. What's more, the compact packaging and the simple Dosy Grip dosing system are a major added value for our staff." Looking ahead, MIVAS vzw aims to focus even more on circular processes and sustainable cleaning methods. "Together with BOMA, we see plenty of potential in this area."
A partnership with impact
The story of MIVAS and BOMA shows how a strong partnership goes beyond products alone. Through advice, support and a shared focus on ergonomics, a working environment is created where staff feel better, tasks remain achievable and quality is guaranteed.
