Public transport operator improves sustainable cleaning with probiotic solution by BOMA

Since 2016, Syntus Utrecht has been operating public transport in the province of Utrecht, including a fleet of seven electric buses. The operator is now taking the next step in sustainability by cleaning the interior of its buses with probiotic cleaning agents. Initial tests delivered positive results.

Extra focus on cleaning

Hygiene and cleaning are essential in public transport. A clean bus contributes to a pleasant travel experience. Especially in times of COVID-19, vehicles are also cleaned between journeys. High-touch points such as poles and handrails receive extra attention through disinfection.

Together with ICS Nederland and BOMA, Syntus Utrecht explored how vehicle cleaning could become more sustainable. This led to the implementation of Probio as a solution.

What is Probio

Probio consists of beneficial micro-organisms of natural origin. These good bacteria remove organic dirt that would otherwise cause unpleasant odours. When released back into the environment after use, they actively contribute to water purification and help maintain a natural microbial balance. Probiotics are therefore not only environmentally friendly, they actively improve the environment.

Positive results

According to Kim Sanders, Logistics Coordinator at Syntus Utrecht, the use of Probio represents a significant sustainability step for both Keolis and ICS:

"The results from the Probio tests were very positive, which allowed us to quickly roll out the solution across all vehicles and break locations. We achieved this in a cost-neutral way. The additional effects are also very beneficial. Probio improves cleaning quality and is pH-neutral, making it safe to use and better for ICS employees. Supplier BOMA shared its knowledge and expertise and supported the setup of the tests. This strong collaboration enabled us to achieve a great result."

Keolis Nederland, the parent company of Syntus Utrecht, is now evaluating whether probiotic cleaning can also be implemented across vehicles in other regions, further reducing its ecological footprint.
